It’s a shame that they sort of forbid singing there because you can tell that some very talented people centuries ago brought all of their skills to build this place with flawless accoustics
So, this is beautiful, but this is a WORKING monastery, meaning there is a community of monks living there. If you rolled up to my living room and just started loudly singing without asking permission, I’d think it was pretty fucking rude, no matter how lovely.
This is the Stabat Mater, though. A sacred hymn to Mary composed in the 13th and one of the most beloved poems of catholic liturgy.
Corsica is renowned for its unique polyphonic style and liturgical songs are a crucial part of its musical tradition. This is a song sung in reverence to pay homage to the holy beauty of a very particular place—the peculiar, phenomenal acoustics of the abbey used to be thought supernatural in the Middle Ages.
And the monks and nuns come together each day to celebrate a mass and sing polyphonic chants, too. It isn’t meant to be silent. As a matter of fact:
This is all true, and there’s a good chance the monks would have enjoyed listening, had they been asked. But at the end of the day this is not a public space, this is a private space and the monks have specifically asked people to be respectful and quiet. Again, this is gorgeous, and yes it’s a beloved Christian chant, but that doesn’t give you permission when you have not asked for it.
This is not just a church. This is home to a community. It should be treated as such.
Just, be respectful in places that aren’t yours.
THANK YOU. I don’t know how to better explain that you don’t get to just do whatever you want wherever and whenever you want. RESPECTING this place means silence. And these entitled “performers” can’t even follow the rule.
As much as I agree with respecting places sometimes you just have to step back and be amazed at the beauty that exists in the world. This is the kind of moment that is life changing
